Merrill Gassman

Dr. Merrill Gassman is a Professor Emeritus of Biological Sciences at the University of Illinois at Chicago, serving as a faculty member from 1969 to 2000. He maintains a connection to the campus as Past President and Webmaster of the UIC Chapter of the State Universities Annuitants Association (SUAA). Dr. Gassman is a Chicago native who received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Chicago during the 1960s, majoring in Biology as an undergraduate and receiving his graduate degrees in Botany. After carrying out postdoctoral research in plant biochemistry at the Rockefeller University in NewYork City, he became a research plant physiologist with International Minerals and Chemical Corp. (now part of the The Mosaic Company) in Libertyville, IL before joining the faculty at UIC. He has also held visiting faculty and research scientist positions at the University of California at Davis, Arizona State University in Tempe, and the RIKEN Institute in Wako, Japan. Dr. Gassman is a member of the American Society of Plant Biologists and the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.  A selected group of his publications may be found here.

Dr. Gassman is married and has three children and 12 grandchildren. His hobbies include using his computer, traveling (particularly cruising), and gardening. His favorite musical artists are the Beatles and the Beach Boys.  To contact him, send an email to mgassman@uic.edu.
